Something Borrowed - Photo Analysis

This photograph does not seem to be about this girl as a person or how she lives. It is like she is in the middle of a daydream. She is in her own mind. She is separated from the world around her creating her own in her head. The butterfly adds a sense of playfulness and alludes to the idea that she may be daydreaming about things that aren’t real. The butterfly also represents the passage of time.

And yet, her neutral expression and limp pose suggest darkness, voyeurism, death. How do we reconcile youth and death, the celebration of private thought and the intrusiveness of photography?
The photograph pushes me off balance. In the contradictory implications it forces me to ask questions I might not want to know the answer to.

Collaborative Project

For this collaborative project, my group decided that we would use the lighting studio and still life objects around the building to make a setting for our photos. We pulled together an eclectic array of objects and focused on mixing patterns in the set up. We wanted to capture dynamic yet relaxed poses and played with incorporating multiple figures in the frame.

Lighting Basics

As an introduction to lighting, we worked in small groups and practiced using various lighting set ups in the studio. Each member of our group became an "expert" in 2 lighting situations and taught the rest of the group where the lights should be placed and other characteristics of the set up. We also rotated between model, lighting assistant, and photographer in order to play each role involved in studio shoots.
